Bluegrass Parlor Band: new member, Smokin’ gig

If you haven’t heard this amazing ensemble, please do yourself a favor and check out the dates below. The young musicians were reared on the wise teachings of Tom Henderson, former Bluegrass Parlor owner and WMNF DJ.  Leader Jeff Jones was his second man in command and took over the band when Henderson retired. Here’s a story I wrote in the Times a few years ago while the shop was still open if you’re interested in how this group got started: http://www.sptimes.com/2005/10/26/news_pf/Tbt/Jam_session_feeds_the.shtml

Announcement from band leader Jones:

Howdy Folks,

As fall approaches, the bluegrass scene is picking up here in central Florida. The Bluegrass Parlor Band has a new look and some dates to share. Local festivals will be starting up very soon. And I have some good new share with everyone.

Bluegrass Parlor Band News
The Bluegrass Parlor Band lineup has undergone a bit of change over the summer. Cory Walker has graduated high school and is attending college in Tennessee. He has joined up with Sierra Hull as the full time banjo player with her band. We would also like to welcome Kayln Hall to the band as our new bass player/vocalist.

BGP Band Lineup
Jeff Jones – Banjo
Jarrod Walker – Mandolin
Tyler Walker – Guitar
Austin Wilder – Guitar
Kayln Hall – Bass

We also have a few upcoming gigs to let you know about. Our partial schedule is listed below, keep checking either the BluegrassParlor.com page or our Myspace page for our most up to date schedule. I wanted to make special mention of the gig at Smoke BBQ. This is a new BBQ restaurant in Tampa that makes some awesome BBQ. The restaurant is owned by Gordon Davis, also the founder of the former St. Bart’s Island House and the booming Ceviche Tapas Bar and Restaurant. He has expressed a desire to have bluegrass bands performing live at the restaurant every week, we will be performing the next 3 Saturdays starting Sept.6th. So I would invite everyone to come to Smoke BBQ to see us one of the next three Saturdays between around 7 and 11 pm.

I am currently teaching lessons on Wednesday evenings and throughout the day on Friday. Lessons are offered on Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar, Dobro, Fiddle, and Bass. I have also started posting short videos on YouTube of songs that current students are working on. I would encourage you to check those out and stay tuned if you find the online videos interesting, I will be trying out a few others things this fall you may enjoy.

Tampa Tribune Article on the Pickford Sundries
There was a very nice article in the Tampa Tribune this past week about the Pickford Sundries. You can check it out here.

Finally,on a personal note I wanted to share some good news. My wife, Terri, is pregnant and we are expecting to have a baby boy join our family in early December. We are both excited and looking forward to this new chapter in our lives.
